Virginia Tech's strong transfer portal cycle continued Wednesday as the Hokies landed a commitment from Troy CB transfer Jaquez White per reports, with White confirming that news to The Tech Lunch Pail.
He chose the Hokies after visiting VT over the weekend followed by a trip to Tennessee. Florida State, Ohio State, and Georgia Tech were among the many other schools also involved in White's recruitment.
He is the ninth transfer addition for the Hokies including the second cornerback addition along with UCONN starting CB Cam Chadwick. He has one year of eligibility plus a redshirt remaining.
White had a standout junior season at Troy after transferring in from DII Washburn, having 67 tackles including 3.5 for loss with one sack plus three interceptions and 11 pass breakups. He earned All-Sun Belt Second Team honors this season.
He earned an 86.8 grade from PFF including an 87.6 run defense grade and 86.6 coverage grade while allowing only 37 of 67 targets (55.2%) to be completed for 412 yards over the course of 434 pass coverage snaps. He is also rated as a four-star transfer by On3 and ranked as the 55th best transfer including the seventh cornerback as of 2pm on January 7th.
It is reasonable to expect White to be a frontrunner to be a starting cornerback for the Hokies next season. From what I've been told, White had a significant price tag (mid to upper six figures per source) and the Hokies clearly were able to meet that or at least do enough to be able to land his commitment.
There's no doubt that White is a proven cornerback who has been impressive at every level he's been at and is more than ready for the challenge ahead. At this time, I would most likely project White to be one of Virginia Tech's starting cornerbacks next season.
With White and Cam Chadwick now on board, Virginia Tech seems likely to be done at cornerback minus landing a younger player who could be more of a developmental type player.
One thing that may have helped the Hokies with their evaluation of White is the fact that Troy head coach Gerad Parker was an assistant for Franklin previously in his career with Franklin visiting Parker and ODU's Ricky Rahne after his PSU dismissal when the two schools faced off in Norfolk earlier this season. Franklin and Parker clearly have a solid friendship and Franklin & his staff were likely able to make sure White would be a good fit with Parker before pursuing him.
