Virginia Tech made a statement about their commitment to recruiting the Commonwealth of Virginia as they extended their first 2024 offer to talented 757 CB Desmond Ricks.
Ricks had this to say about what it meant to receive an offer from Virginia Tech.
"I was excited to finally get an in-state offer. Coach Redd; my mentor who coaches me on my 14u tackle ball club team, made the connection to Coach (Ryan) Smith. He conferenced me in on the call and I was excited to hear coach (Ryan Smith) say those magic words. VT is a good program and they have offered a lot of my past club team members early like 2021 DT Katron Evans & 2022 DT Paul Hutson so I feel right in tune," Ricks said.
Additionally, Ricks told us that it "feels good" to be the first offer for Virginia Tech in the 2024 class. That home state appeal also has Ricks excited to build a strong relationship with the Hokies' coaching staff.
"There’s nothing like home so I'm definitely looking forward to building bonds with the coaching staff throughout my recruitment," Ricks said.
Ricks has already received 4 offers including his first one during the fall of his 8th grade year (2019) from Tennessee followed by ones from Southern Miss and North Carolina prior to his Tech offer. While way early offers can be risky sometimes, Ricks does show the potential to be one of the elite 2024 recruits nationally especially given the pedigree of playing for the 757 Colts along with having great size at 6'1'' already.
His talent has also been recognized by one of the most prestigious high school teams in America, IMG Academy, with Ricks announcing recently that he is transferring to IMG this fall.
Going to IMG will definitely give Ricks a tremendous platform to impress every college football program in America, but it seems clear that his 757 roots will help give the Hokies at least a chance early on in his recruitment. However, maintaining a spot as a top contender over the long haul will be a major challenge especially with Ricks at an IMG program that every school in America recruits.
Tech's first 2024 offer is a reminder of their commitment to prioritizing Virginia as they extend an offer to elite 757 CB Desmond Ricks.
