Virginia Tech Football Recruiting Notes 5/26/20

As the recruiting trail continues to stay busy, here are some of the latest Virginia Tech football recruiting notes taking a look at a few front 7 players.

3* DE Mattheus Carroll

Priority target Mattheus Carroll revealed his top 3 on Memorial Day with Virginia Tech unsurprisingly making the cut along with Maryland and Duke.

Carroll has previously told us that he is now planning to make a decision sooner than he originally planned to with this top 3 being a strong indication that a decision may be very close.

While Duke did make the cut, the Blue Devils seem like major long shots with Tech and Maryland being the two clear favorites. While both bring plenty of appeal, Virginia Tech does seem to be a slight frontrunner in part because of the fact that Carroll has taken both in-person and virtual visits. Additionally, the Hokies have gained traction because of their new defensive line coaches and their NFL pedigree with Carroll being "confident" that VT can fully develop him.

Meanwhile, Maryland is pushing with their available homegrown talent and UMD's long-term program vision, both of those things helping the Terps gain lots of traction with Carroll.

A decision is approaching for Mattheus Carroll with Virginia Tech, Maryland, and Duke battling it out for the underrated three-star DE.

3* DE Robert Jackson

Robert Jackson hasn't received the same amount of attention as other Hokie defensive line targets, but Virginia Tech is right in the hunt for Jackson.

Jackson told us that the Hokies are standing "very high" in his recruitment. He also hears "a lot" from the Hokies with Rutgers, Indiana, Arizona State, and Pittsburgh also heavily recruiting the talented 6'6'' defensive end from Archbishop Wood HS in Warminster, PA.

Tech also has had some success recruiting at his high school with the Hokies previously landing Nasir Peoples from Archbishop Wood along with Rutgers transfer Raheem Blackshear who graduated from Archbishop Wood HS. Those connections to Jackson could prove valuable as the Hokies look to land him as part of a large defensive line class.

At this point, Jackson seems far from really starting to slim things down in his recruitment, but the Hokies are a clear contender with a national group of suitors involved in his recruitment.

3* LB/DE Sebastian Sagar

Sebastian Sagar is an intriguing hybrid linebacker/defensive end target for Virginia Tech with the three-star recruit from New York having a few schools emerging at the moment.

Sagar told us that Virginia Tech is among four schools currently standing out for him along with fellow ACC rivals Miami, Boston College, and Syracuse. Sagar told us that Miami in particular has been pushing hard for him.

One indication that VT sees him more as a pass rushing prospect is the fact that VT's defensive line coaches, Darryl Tapp and Bill Teerlinck, have taken a primary role in his recruitment along with assistant Zach Sparber, who also primarily works with defensive linemen. This is also one area where VT seems to be looking at evolving their defense under Justin Hamilton by adding some more hybrid pass-rushing linebackers with current LB Amare Barno being the first in that mold.

Keep an eye on Sagar as his recruitment becomes an ACC battle between a pair of the conference's Northeast programs and the two biggest football schools in the Coastal.
