Virginia Tech has had their fair share of success recruiting in North Carolina and they're hoping for that to continue. In particular, the Hokies are hoping to turn Shelby HS in Shelby, NC into a pipeline after landing Dax Hollifield in the 2018 class, looking to add his brother Jack Hollifield to their 2021 class, and now targeting multiple 2022 recruits from Shelby including Malaki Hamrick.
That was proven by Virginia Tech extending an offer to the four-star LB/DE recruit recently.
Hamrick told us that he was "relieved and surprised" to receive an offer from Virginia Tech especially after the multitude of visits he had taken to Virginia Tech. That included most recently visiting for the Hokies early March Junior Day where he told us that he and his uncles had a "great time" on their visit to Blacksburg.
Unlike most recruits who receive offers as rising juniors or earlier, Hamrick had been receiving lots of interest from Virginia Tech with the Hokies now going all in on Hamrick as a priority target with this offer.
Unsurprisingly, this offer has a significant impact both on his recruitment and where Virginia Tech stands in it.
"It impacts it greatly. I have visited Virginia Tech the most. My family loves it. Dax (Hollifield) is doing well, and they have done as much as they can do far as checking in on me! So i like that so far about Virginia Tech," Hamrick said.
While Dax Hollifield may not have been at Shelby HS at the same time as Hamrick, he definitely has left a legacy that many including Hamrick are looking to follow. However, the connections go beyond the common high school bonds to a close relationship in part built around the two training together when Hollifield is in Shelby.
"We’re close enough that he keeps it real with me about what being a college athlete is about and especially one at VT. We also are trained by the same trainer back home. Dax make sure he stops in whenever he’s home," Hamrick said.
In addition to Hollifield giving Hamrick more insight about Virginia Tech, Hamrick has also built a strong relationship with his area recruiter, TEs coach James Shibest.
"It’s great. We talk about the transition from high school to college and how you just got to be a dog at whatever college you go to, because once you get there, you're at the bottom and you have to work your way to the top," Hamrick said about his relationship with Shibest.
Virginia Tech is looking to turn Shelby HS into a recruiting pipeline with the Hokies in good shape with Malaki Hamrick early in part because of their current star from Shelby, NC; Dax Hollifield.
