Virginia Tech landed some more infield depth as Mount Saint Mary's INF Sam Grube committed to the Hokies.
Smith, standing at 6'3 and hailing from Pennsylvania, is the sixth addition of the 2025 Virginia Tech portal class. He joins Saint Joseph's INF Owen Petrich, George Washington OF Sam Gates, Belmont INF Pete Daniel, Xavier SP Ben Weber, and Texas A&M P Peyton Smith.
Grube will come to Virginia Tech as a true sophomore after spending his inaugural year at Mount St. Mary's.
"I really feel that VT is the place that I can develop, and could see myself having success," Grube said. "Also really connected well with Coach Elbin and Coach Szefc."
During his freshman year, Grube was quite good, slashing .293/.415/.434 with four home runs, 45 RBIs, and 16 extra-base hits. As you can see, he walks a lot, even more than he strikes out, so he has a great leadoff hitter profile if he can keep or raise his average.
The power isn't all the way there, but with the elite on base and elite speed (27 stolen bases, four triples), he will likely find a way to fit into the lineup.
He is the second middle infield addition, which gives the Hokies solid depth at minimum and a potential starter if they lose Clay Grady to the draft. With that in mind, if Jared Davis returns, I would expect him to make the full-time move to the outfield given the infield depth with Grady, Pete Daniel, and Grube.
