Ellis is the Hokies’ 16th transfer addition this cycle including the sixth defensive back, joining Clemson S Sherrod Covil Jr, East Carolina CB Isaiah Brown-Murray, Sam Houston S Isaiah Cash, Rice S Tyson Flowers, and Wingate DB Joseph Reddish. Ellis has one year of eligibility remaining plus a redshirt if he needs it.
Ellis had an impressive junior season for New Mexico with 99 tackles including 3.5 for loss plus an interception and four pass breakups on his way to earning All-Mountain West Honorable Mention honors. He also earned a 70.6 PFF grade including a 76.1 grade in coverage.
Ellis adds further depth to the Hokies at safety while having the talent to battle the other three safeties and rising sophomore Quentin Reddish for a starting job this season. For a team that has had issues with safety depth recently, that is absolutely resolved for 2025.
Ellis also is similar to Isaiah Cash in that he has significant experience working at nickel, with 487 snaps in the slot over the past two seasons per PFF. Don’t be surprised if either Ellis or Cash takes on the nickel role for 2025 while VT develops other guys like Brown-Murray to potentially fill that role in 2026.
With Ellis on board, the Hokies are done at defensive back for this transfer portal class it would appear with an overhauled safety room and a veteran corner in Brown-Murray to pair with Dante Lovett.
