Virginia Tech has added some depth at quarterback in the form of Oklahoma State QB Garret Rangel.

He is the 11th transfer portal addition this spring joining North Dakota State DT Kody Huisman, West Virginia OL Gavin Crawford, Hawaii CB Caleb Brown, Georgia Southern DT Elhadj Fall, Iowa State LS Drew Doyle, Temple LB Antwone Santiago, Jackson State WR Isaiah Spencer, USF DL Immanuel Hickman, North Carolina LB Michael Short, and Auburn OL Jaden Muskrat.

He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Rangel spent three seasons as primarily the backup QB at Oklahoma State while making a few starts earlier on in his career. He completed just over 50% of his passes in his time in Stillwater for a total of 1,075 yards with an 8-7 TD-INT ratio. He earned a 70.1 PFF grade in 2023 over just 35 offensive snaps. In 2022 as a true freshman, he saw the most action, playing 229 snaps and earning a PFF grade of 49.0.

At worst, Rangel gives the Hokies an experienced third string quarterback, which they did not have in 2024 when they had to lean on Pop Watson for the last three games of the season.

However, Rangel could fit the mold of Montgomery's offense more than Pop Watson does, so there is a very good chance that he can create competition and push Watson for the second string job during the summer and fall camp.

We will have more as this story develops.
