The 2025 season is just one week away with Virginia Tech set to reveal their first depth chart of the season soon ahead of next Sunday's opening showdown with South Carolina in Atlanta. With a multitude of new transfers arriving this offseason, this will be a depth chart that looks a lot different than what the Hokies had last year.
So who will make Virginia Tech's first two-deep depth chart. Here are my predictions on the offensive side of the ball.
Quarterback
- QB1: Kyron Drones
- QB2: Pop Watson
Kyron Drones as the starting quarterback is obvious. The redshirt senior is fully healthy again and as far as I know, he's had a injury-free camp. When Drones has been healthy, he's shown massive upside as a dual-threat quarterback as we saw at times in the opener against Vanderbilt and during the 2023 season. For the second-straight year, Drones will top the Hokies' depth chart for the season opener.
Last year, Pop Watson entered fall camp as QB2 with a spring transfer addition pushing him in Collin Schlee. While Schlee was able to pass a younger Watson that offseason, I don't expect this year's spring QB addition Garret Rangel to surpass or even be listed alongside Watson on the first depth chart.
The redshirt sophomore QB has built on the late season experience he gained last year and had a strong offseason as coaches have noted. Watson has consistently received the reps that you would expect the backup QB to receive in the limited portions of practice that we've gotten to see so far.
Rangel will continue to push Watson throughout the fall as the two not only battle for the backup QB job but also the 2026 starting QB job. However, Watson seems to be the clear backup as of now.
Running Back
- RB1:
