Johnson becomes the eighth Hokie to enter the transfer portal joining the following players.
- RB Kenji Christian
- CB Elijah Howard
- QB Tahj Bullock
- QB Devin Farrell
- WR Dallan Wright
- DE Kyree Moyston
- S Jalen Hoyle
Johnson played in 2 games this past season receiving some defensive playing time against North Carolina and Miami while recording 3 tackles total over the course of his season. An injury ended his season early leading to him redshirting and then missing much of full contact action in spring practice. He will have four years of eligibility remaining.
Johnson's departure is the most surprising one to date as he's the one transfer who I would have projected in the two-deep as a backup CB even with Johnson coming off injury. The former four-star showed promise in limited reps last season and had received praise from coaches prior to the season in fall camp. While there are talented true freshman on this team,
Johnson was a solid safety net even if a little undersized in terms of weight as a CB4. It wouldn't surprise me if Johnson lands at another Power 5 or at a G5 where he plays immediately.
With Johnson entering the portal, Virginia Tech is now at 84 scholarships though that may be one lower if TE Zeke Wimbush delays his enrollment to next spring.
Tech has been looking for a DB with a focus on safety though they have shown some interest in CBs including Georgia transfer Marcus Washington Jr. Safety should likely be the greater focus still with Antonio Cotman Jr enrolling early and showing the potential to be a good CB4 this fall along with other promising freshmen including Dante Lovett arriving this summer.
