One of the biggest issues for Virginia Tech last year was the fact that the Hokies didn't have a lot of playmakers on offense outside of WR Kaleb Smith and RB Malachi Thomas. That proved to be quite the problem for the Hokies and their offense which struggled mightily as Thomas dealt with injuries throughout the season while Smith didn't have enough help around him on a consistent basis. That also proved to contribute to the struggles that Grant Wells had in his first year as VT's starting QB.
Entering the offseason, those struggles made upgrading the offensive skill position talent a priority across the board this offseason regardless of whether Wells or transfer Kyron Drones was the starting quarterback which is exactly what Tech did.
A lot of that came from the transfer portal pairing NC A&T standout RB Bhayshul Tuten with Thomas while overhauling the WR room with the transfer additions of Ali Jennings, Jaylin Lane, and Da'Quan Felton. Adding four proven players like that who have shown at lower levels that they have what it takes to produce in a Power 5 league was an instant boost.
Tech also had some guys develop further including veteran like Nick Gallo and Stephen Gosnell plus younger guys like Tucker Holloway, Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw, DaeQuan Wright, and Benji Gosnell. They also brought in a loaded WR class that has multiple guys pushing to play this fall including Ayden Greene and Takye Heath.
Overall, it's left an overhauled group of offensive skill positions that has Virginia Tech excited for how they can improve on offense this fall even as fans may have concerns about Grant Wells being back as the starting quarterback.
That includes head coach Brent Pry who believes these offensive skill position upgrades beyond just the WR room overhaul can help Wells step his game up.
All that is great if our young OL can improve
We need to have that run blocking working all season and develop pass blocking as the season develops
