Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball has made arguably their biggest splash of this transfer portal cycle, as the Hokies have landed a commitment from Northwestern G/F Melannie Daley as she announced on Instagram.

The 5’11’’ Daley is the Hokies’ third transfer of the offseason along with Purdue guard Sophie Swanson and Texas Tech forward Kilah Freelon. She has one year of eligibility remaining.

She comes to Blacksburg after averaging 11+ points per game in each of the past two seasons for the Wildcats. This past season, Daley averaged 11.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 steals in 26.5 minutes per game while shooting 46.7% from the field and 80.0% from the free-throw line.

Daley is a proven, power conference scorer who fits in immediately on the wing as a slasher and mid-range scorer. She’s also a solid defender who has averaged over a steal per game each of the past two seasons.

There are fair questions about her shooting ability as she has barely shot any threes throughout her collegiate career. That’s not exactly ideal for a 5’11’’ wing especially on a VT team that doesn’t have the most shooting on paper, and hasn’t much through the portal on that front either.

Despite those shooting concerns, her offensive analytics are strong as she has had 2.0+ offensive win shares and an offensive box score of 4.0 or better each of the past two seasons.

The Hokies still have three scholarships available but it’s unclear if they might be content at a 12-player roster or look to add a couple more.
