Our annual Virginia Tech Hokies Football recruiting breakdown series continues today as we turn our attention to running back. You can check out all of our other recruiting breakdowns to date using the links below.
One of the biggest roster management shifts under Brent Pry has been at running back where the Hokies have gone from having around 8-10 scholarship RBs during the Justin Fuente era to currently only having four heading into the 2024 season. It’s fair to expect that the Hokies need to take at least one running back this cycle and possibly two, though the portal could also factor in especially with Bhayshul Tuten entering his final year of eligibility as Malachi Thomas only having one more season after this fall.
So with that said, let’s jump right in to where things stand for the Hokies at RB for the 2025 and 2026 classes.
2025: At Least One RB But Maybe More
As mentioned above, Virginia Tech needs to take at least one high school running back this cycle with two being a strong possibility even with a portal addition. Currently, the Hokies are set to have only three scholarship RBs for 2025 in Malachi Thomas, Jeremiah Coney, and Tyler Mason. That’s a very thin depth chart for any position.
Let’s start then with an in-state standout who not only is a RB target, but has been one of the Hokies’ top offensive targets this cycle, three-star RB Jeff Overton Jr out of Northern Virginia.
Overton was a star this past season with over 2,300 yards and 44 touchdowns this past season on his way to earning All-State First Team as a RB and a DB. That’s helped him build an impressive offer which includes the likes of Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, South Carolina, Maryland, and many more.
Overton has four official visits set in the coming weeks including one to Virginia Tech as listed below.
