Virginia Tech G Jaydon Young is entering the transfer portal according to The Portal Report, becoming the second Hokie to enter the portal along with Rodney Brown Jr.
Young spent the past two seasons at Virginia Tech in a small rotation role as a freshman before being in and out of the starting lineup this season. Young averaged 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 22.4 minutes per game while shooting 34.7% from the field including 29.6% from three-point range. He also finished this season strong, scoring in double figures in six-straight games to finish the season including 26+ points twice.
Young will have two years of eligibility and a redshirt remaining.
Young’s loss is the most significant so far as he was pushing his way into the starting lineup and had a strong finish to the season. He could have easily ended up in the starting lineup over Jaden Schutt for the 2025-26 season or in a sixth man role at minimum, but will instead head elsewhere as of now.
Pending transfer additions, this likely gives VT a starting backcourt trio of Ben Hammond, Schutt, and Tyler Johnson for next season.
The new House Settlement rules means that the number to watch is 15 rather than 13 similar how football is now 105 rather than 85, with those numbers being roster spots instead of just scholarship players. All 15 roster spots can be on scholarship now compared to the maximum 13 scholarship opportunities plus walk-ons.
With that in mind, Young’s departure puts the Hokies at 11 players for next season, leaving four spots open at the moment. Center and bigger wings/forwards seem likely to be the priorities currently given what VT has returning in the backcourt plus Tobi Lawal at the four with additional frontcourt help and depth needed around him. However, having both Young and Brown leaving increases the interest for another shooting guard to fill one of those four spots.
